Overview:

This presentation will explore intergenerational trauma and the concept of epigenetics as it impacts trauma symptoms in 2nd, 3rd and succeeding generations. The power of trauma endured by past generations to permeate decades and effect behaviors and undefined pain of succeeding generations is no longer a postulate, it is evident. Wikipedia describes ” historical trauma” as cumulative emotional and psychological wounding, exceeding over an individual’s lifespan and across generations, caused by significant group traumatic experiences. Intergenerational trauma is all of that and more… The mystery and secrets imbedded in present day emotional behaviors is as wounding as the events themselves. Often family secrets and family history live in a dark and quiet place, usually for the presumed protection of loved one. Our experience has shown that the “aha” moment for individuals, the revelation of causality is a huge leap in the healing process. Trauma healing incorporates understanding the potential generational aspects of coping mechanisms passed from one generation to the next. We will explore the essence, the signs and symptoms, case studies of various group traumas and their effect on succeeding generations.

Learning Objectives:

  • The participant will be able to define and identify Intergenerational trauma.
  • The participant will explore 3-5 examples of Inherited trauma.
  • The participant will identify present day signs and symptoms and correlate to inherited trauma.
  • The participant will identify 3 interventions to alleviate or resolve trauma signs and symptoms.
  • The participant will identify 3 examples of recent national or international events that may impact future generations traumatically
