Highlights

Medical and Legalized Marijuana: What We Can Learn from Colorado’s Experience -

In this talk we will trace the process by which marijuana was legalized in Colorado, the legislative and regulatory challenges subsequent to legalization, and challenges and opportunities for prevention programs. Colorado’s unique history with marijuana has also provided us with data regarding potential impact of progressive decriminalization (i.e. medical marijuana) on communities, and we will discuss some of Peer Assistance Services’ recent findings in these areas. Additionally, we will describe processes developed within our programs (including Workplace Prevention Services and Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment [SBIRT]) to improve services for clients and programs operating within a framework of ambiguously-legalized marijuana at the State level.

Recovery through Entrepreneurship

We will host nationally recognized presenters in a plenary followed by  a round table discussion with representatives of six diverse perspectives including:

(1) substance abuse treatment programs that have successfully employed entrepreneurial approaches

(2) universities

(3) business

(4) labor

(5) government

(6) private foundations with an interest in the role of employment through entrepreneurship in recovery from substance abuse. The roundtable discussants will focus on the challenges of applying entrepreneurial thinking and training, ways of partnering to advance these efforts, and what we can do in the future.

The following is a sampling of tentatively scheduled session topics:

  • Criminal and Addictive Thinking
  • Drug Testing: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions and New Drug Trends
  • Evidence Based Substance Abuse Treatment in Juveniles
  • Risk, Need, and Responsivity Tool for Reentry
